My Father had LVAD implanted last week

Hello... My father had his LVAD surgery a week ago yesterday. He is still in the hospital and hoping to come home next week. He still is very weak and gets light headed when he tries to walk. Is this normal? How long before he will gain strengh and walk without feeling dizzy? Also, what kind of diet does everyone follow? Before surgery we had my father basically on a no salt diet. Can we loosen the reigns a little when he gets home? It is very hard to cook and prepare meals that have NO salt in them! Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

I had problems with being light headed until they adjusted down my dose of Coreg (not sure if that is one of your dad's drugs). They may also need to adjust his pump speed. Just be sure both the doctor and the LVAD nurse he likely meets with regularly know about the problem. I often found the LVAD nurse gave me solutions faster than the doctor. Regarding the diet, I use organic, celtic, raw sea salt since I am on a nutrient-dense diet. I salt my food as any non-heart patient would. But - that is me. You will likely be able to add some salt back in - all depends on how effectively the LVAD is working for him. If he is no longer retaining fluid, the restrictions on salt should be eased.

Thank you for your response. My father is on Coreg. I will have him speak to his nurses as he is also having shortness of breath after he does any walking. His doctors are saying he is progressing nicely but of course i worry about everything. Again, thank you.
