New LVAD caregiver

My husband got an LVAD on Oct.23, 2012. All seems to be going well. It is a little overwhelming and I feel worried about what may go wrong or happen. Does this get better?

Hi. My husband just got his LVAD September 12, 2012. I worry about everything. Luckily, when I have any concern, I can call an 800 number and they will page a nurse right away. Don't be afraid to call a nurse or doctor. It will relieve some stress and worry.

Karron, It will get better, but it is not easy, my husband had his lvad 8-13-12, he has gone back to work, but still tires easy. I have to say, compared to how he was preop, he so much better. I think what is the hardest is the dressing. Everyday.. I am a nurse too, but, once you come home, it is like you are still on call, but after many crying episodes, sorry to say, I realize without our constant care, your loved one would not be here, but for modern tech. Hang in there. I so realize where you are coming from.....

Best advice I got was to call the VAD center and talk to a coordinator. No question is out of bounds, except the one that doesn't get asked. Then you're in for a stressful ride. Airing the concern with an LVAD coordinator brings solutions and, more importantly, peace of mind.

I have had a HM II since 4/10 and am feeling great. It took time to regain endurance. Now naps are not an everyday thing.
