Tender,Red,Bleeding skin tissue growth around driveline at exit site

I've been living with an LVAD for four years and nine months. The condition of the skin growth around the circumference of the driveline at the exit site has been incrementally deteriorating for the last two years and now appears with a raw collar of red tissue next to the driveline velour cover (looks and feels like shingle virus lesion) and red rash extending an inch or two out on the skin from the inflamed scar tissue immediately next to the driveline. My LVAD team at MGH in Boston monitors white blood cell count and has cultured the bloody drainage twice, and they tell me that the results do not indicate an infection. Certainly there is worsening inflammation that will inevitably lead to subcutaneous infection around the driveline, if the deteriorating condition cannot be reversed. Has anyone had this issue and how can the deterioration be turned around and healing start to take place? Any thoughts or referrals would be most welcome. Living in fear of impending infection, with a high probability of death as the outcome. Jeff Maynard

Jeff, My husband has exactly the same thing and has had it before. It is an infection, but it is not an infection of the driveline itself - it is the surrounding skin. You should call your doctor and let them know. They may want to look at it and they most certainly will prescribe some antibiotics for you. It is not going to be fatal. If it's really bad, they may want to put you in the hospital and give you IV antibiotics. But, don't worry, they can take care of it. Karla Clark

How about them do a tissue samples of it. That'll surely give you a better answer, you would think. Have they consider maybe it's time for a new port hole, but then again I'm not sure how deep of a surgery they'll have to perform to do that. Just my two cents. I'm still new, only had my Gary for seven months.

I have much the same problems as Jeff. I have been on antibiotics for over a month and am not seeing much improvement as yet. I am 14 months out of surgery and am active with working on my motor coach and fly fishing. I believe that my irritation started from a pulling on the drive line from hanging on the car seat belt buckle when I egress. (Have since developed a hesitation check to help stop that nonsense. ) Also I find that the connector between the drive line and controller will cause some movement of the drive line and anchor. It is hard to get the proper loop buffer between the anchor and insert abdomen area because of skin rash from the dressing changes. My LVAD team are staying on top of it, but after a month I am ready for this to settle down. I am assured that patience is key and follow direction to the letter, which is done always anyway. Just frustrating I guess. Be safe out there, Ralph L Fullenwider Oklahoma
