Pi events

Hi, my dad has an Lvad. I was just curious if anyone could share with me why lvad patients have pi events. Do pi events only occur when the pump is trying to suction the heart? Or are there other reasons? I notice that after he has one his pump power will go higher than usual to get his speed back up. Which makes sense but it still scares me.
